A_Gedichthintergrund3

One day from all vastnesses we will
come home to you and be no more alone.
On steps and flagstone and door sill
see hearth and lamp spread their warm tone.
Again we'll see your joyful face
stand so ineffably close and true -
the tired limbs eased by a caress
and we shall no more go from you.

One day rifle and spade will slide
away from our hands' frozen skin.
For us the summer's seeds, full, wide,
will mean our most delightful win.
All skies are pouring out their blue
upon us in full mercy's loading.
Year and day and hour give us new
returning, comfort, and reposing.

One day we shall have left war behind,
escaped all death and harm and woe.
Our manly wild desires will find
into your love their quiet flow.
Our rough words will fade away
when you will be close by, anew -
and it was but a long journey -
and we shall no more go from you.

6th May 1942

And it was but a long journey.

Von dir -

Wenn ich deine Schrift nur sehe,
- sei sie mir auch ohne Sinn -
bist du ganz in meiner Nähe
und auch ich dir nahe bin.

Runder Mond hängt überm Walde,
leuchtet dir und leuchtet mir,
Soldaten ziehn am Waldesrande
verstaubt und müde ins Quartier.

Wir lagern tief in Gras und Ähren
sind allem brüderlich verwandt.
So alle Not und Bangnis klären
die starken Zeichen deiner Hand.

Morgen, ruft der Krieg uns dröhnend
über Hügel, Tal und Fluß,
spreche ich nochmal, versöhnend,
deinen lieben guten Gruß.

Wenn ich deine Schrift nur sehe,
- sei sie mir auch ohne Sinn -
bist du ganz in meiner Nähe
und auch ich dir nahe bin.
