Heinrich Knapp began his education as a student of theology in Halle / Saale. After having almost completed this education he - and that's what his sister
, 10 years younger, later often remarked with a critical connotation - claimed to have discovered his conscience or, as the family said, the sweetness of life and did not want to become a reverend any more, but changed to study medicine. Some
from this phase of Heinrich's life are reported by his nephew Kurt Müller, the son of Heinrich's sister Frieda.

From about 1900 Heinrich Knapp had a medical practice in Bonn where from 1899 (and until 1914) also his parents lived, for some years in the same house with him (see below).

The address book of 1933 shows that he meanwhile had moved from Kaiser-Wilhelm-Straße 15 (near the river) to a more central location (Salinenstraße 66):
In the year 1923 Heinrich Knapp moved back to his home region on the river Nahe, to Bad Kreuznach where he worked as a "Specialist for Lung and Heart Diseases" and a spa doctor (see below).
