Notes by Richard Humphreys (Robert's grandson):

1

: "I think colitis (as used here) just means diarrhoea."

2 :

"Hissar seems to have been drought-ridden. There seems to have been a big irrigation project. This would accord with Robert and Mick's [

Robert and Mick Humphreys, grandsons of Robert Humphreys

] recollections that Grandfather got his Kaisar-i- Hind for something to do with irrigation. The K-i-H was supposed to be gold."

4 :

"Komagata Maru was a Japanese ship, which sought to take Indian immigrants to Canada, in violation of (or perhaps to test) a new law designed to keep Canada white. The Budge-Budge riot took place when the ship was re-routed on her return to Budge- Budge, 15 miles from Calcutta. If Grandfather was wounded in the riot, he was obviously present."

3 :

"Fakir Sayed Iftikhar-ud-Din (slightly different spelling, but surely a relatively unusual name) was British agent in Afghanistan 1908-1910."

John Humphreys adds: " 'Agent' sounds a bit James Bond to modern ears, but see

List of British and Indian agents in Afghanistan

, c.1856-1947:  the Afghans required a specifically Moslem representative of British India who was to be resident in Kabul. When the Fakir was replaced in July 1910, the man who was sent north in his place came from Bhawalpur; Gertrude wrote about meeting its young Maharajah at his installation, and it's clear that Grandfather was one of the British officials working with the state of Bhawalpur. I have a postcard he sent which has a small photo of the Bhawalpur State Elephants, sent in September 1903,  announcing '...our latest craze - picture P.C.s'."

5 :

"Did his diplomacy fail? Or was someone else in charge? Madras (his next posting) is a very long way away. To let memories cool off?"
